Lean as a Counter-Measure to Major Project Risks for Owners, Designers and Constructors
Greg Howell has changed his schedule to join Will Lichtig in heading up this highly interactive session in which we plan to break new ground in the area of risk recognition and mitigation.
You won’t want to miss this opportunity to work directly with industry leaders and with two of the most prominent voices in the lean construction movement.

Will Lichtig VP, Boldt & Greg Howell President, LCI
Abstract:
Nearly every organization involved in capital project delivery is focused on reducing the many forms of project risk. There seems to be a very good reason for this, as an unacceptably high proportion of major capital projects seem to encounter risks far different, or to a far greater magnitude, than was expected when the decisions were made to proceed.
Please join us for a highly interactive workshop in which we will explore the major sources of project risk and work to identify the underlying root causes in a way we may not have previously considered. We will explore these risks from the perspectives of Owners, subcontractors, designers, construction managers, and others engaged in delivering large projects. We will then address the degree to which lean practices can be an effective counter-measure to the risks, as well as what additional risks that might be introduced if lean practices are implemented – especially if they are implemented without appropriate care.
Date and Time:
Thursday, December 15, 2011 9:30am-2:00pm
Cancellation Deadline: Friday December 9, 2011 11:55pm. There will be no refunds after this time. Each person must register and pay to attend the meeting and dinner. Please help us save time, expense, and avoid people showing up at the last minute… plan ahead and register early! We cannot keep costs reasonable and caterers cannot plan their food without sufficient notice.
Value-Added Proposition:
Participants will be able to expand their understanding of key risk issues while learning new ways to analyze complex issues all while having a great time. Don’t plan on sitting through another PowerPoint presentation – you will be involved in the whole program.

LCI Cascadia Community of Practice
The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.
The Cascadia Community of Practice (CoP) of LCI serves the BC, WA, and OR region, providing local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors, and suppliers. We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a local user group to learn, share, and develop a lean community. As a regional forum for conversations among practitioners, the CoP will help create a new common sense for the AEC industry as LCI continues to build knowledge in design and construction.
